Bleeding gums are not normal — the early warning you can still reverse

Stage one: gingivitis, and it is reversible

Plaque left along the gum line for a couple of days triggers inflammation. Gums look puffy and red, bleed on brushing, and breath goes stale. At this stage there is no bone loss. A professional scaling plus two weeks of proper brushing and interdental cleaning returns the gums to health completely.

Stage two: periodontitis, and it is not

If inflammation persists, the body begins resorbing the bone that anchors the tooth. Pockets deepen, gums recede, teeth start to feel long, drift or loosen. Treatment can stop the progression and stabilise the mouth, but the lost bone does not come back on its own.

Risk factors that speed it up

Smoking and tobacco chewing are the biggest, and they also mask bleeding, so damage advances silently. Uncontrolled diabetes works in both directions — gum disease worsens sugar control and poor control worsens gum disease. Pregnancy and some medications raise inflammation too.

The routine that works

Two minutes of brushing twice daily along the gum line at 45 degrees, an interdental brush or floss once a day, and a professional cleaning every six months. Scaling does not loosen teeth or 'wear the enamel' — it removes the calculus that was holding inflammation in place.
